The first region-restricted episode of CNS inflammatory demyelination in a patient. It is usually characterized by an acute monosymptomatic presentation of the optic nerves, brainstem, or spinal cord. It may not reoccur (isolated), or it may progress to MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. Diseases characterized by loss or dysfunction of myelin in the central or peripheral nervous system.
