Meiotic Prophase I

Definitions
The stage of meiotic prophase I following DIPLONEMA when the homologous CHROMOSOMES complete CROSSING OVER and separation, and become fully condensed. The prophase of the first division of MEIOSIS (in which homologous CHROMOSOME SEGREGATION occurs). It is divided into five stages: leptonema, zygonema, PACHYNEMA, diplonema, and diakinesis. The stage during the first meiotic prophase, following PACHYTENE STAGE, when the SYNAPTONEMAL COMPLEX dissolves and the homologous CHROMOSOMES begin to separate. The stage during meiotic prophase I, following LEPTOTENE STAGE, during which SYNAPSIS occurs between homologous CHROMOSOMES via the SYNAPTONEMAL COMPLEX. The first stage of meiotic prophase I when the CHROMOSOMES first become visible. Also called leptonema. Distinguish from the genus Leptonema.
